
A less popular but beautiful form of Indian classical dance is Sattriya Nritya.A very special attribute of Sattriya Nritya is its originality that remains the same since the 15th century.This dance form had no need to be re-developed as in the case of some other Indian classical dances.Hence in Sattriya Nritya, the traditional values of the dance have remained intact.
Originally from Assam, Sattriya was one more of the temple ritual dance however with a difference.This dance was presented by male devotees as a tradition but now females too are performing.It is said about Sattriya that it was formed by Shankar Deva a spiritual poet; to promote spirituality in Assam by way of dance and entertainment.
The music lend for Sattriya dance are compositions done mainly by Shankar Deva; which is formed on the various ragas.This music is played with cymbals, flute and drums.The dancers mostly wear Indian traditional costumes like Dhotis for Men and Saris draped in a different way than the usual, for Women.It is a combination of white and cream color.
The dance steps in Sattriya dance requires the dancers to keep changing from standing and sitting positions.Even though it can be tiring for the dancers they keep their expressions just right.
There are more than ten repertoire set up for Sattriya Nritya.The most popular is the Apsara Nritya.With so much interest generated towards Sattriya Nritya over the last few decades it is likely to be one of the most loved dance forms at a global level.
