A Classical dance form from Orissa, Odissi dance got the name from the state Orissa. However, in the ancient times, it was a part of the rituals in the temple from North of India and was referred to as Odra-Magadhi.
Over the years, the art was forgotten and almost finished with the British`s Anti-Nautch movement. Years later, group of art lovers helped in reviving it following the manuscripts and other relevant literature on Indian dance. It would be difficult to say, if the present day Odissi dance is exactly the same as practiced in the olden days.
Until 1950s, Odissi dance was heard of only within India, after that it was gradually exposed globally. The dance form which was originally confined to the temple walls was performed on stage. There are dancing schools now, which pass on this art to young and old enthusiasts. There are regular stage shows on Odissi dance in different parts of India and abroad.
Odissi dance has more religious fervor in it as it was originally a temple dance meant to invoke the blessings of the almighty. The main theme of this dance is based on the courting days of Radha and Lord Krishna.
The dance movements are performed leisurely putting the best expression forward. Similar to Bharat Natyam in Odissi dance also there are the Mudras (hand movements) that are given lot of importance by the dancers. Other than this, beautiful neck and hip movements by the dancers make the dance all the more graceful.
